True Value R-I-P

Post about everything from carrying a handkerchief to manly skills (sharpening a pocket knife, etc), to product reviews of items that may have slipped inder our radar (ie Grandpa's Pine Tar soap). No threads on anything 'new' unless it hearkens to old-fashioned sensibilities and ideals.

True Value R-I-P

I'm posting this here because True Value made some truly great saws and axes made in the good ol' USA back in the day. Every so often I'll find a dusty sample in an independent hardware store, usually a red bow saw---the axes have long gone---and I'll tell some young whipper snapper to make haste and nab it.

I still have (and use) the True Value bow saw and axe my day bought long before I was born.
I've hung a new handle on the axe a few year back, and the bow saw has been repainted (red) a few times. It's probably due for another coat soon.
I doubt if the new True Value branded stuff is equal to the old, but now it won't make a bit of difference.

My FIL was a True Value man for many years at Sharp’s Hardware in Dallas. He was loyal company man and would be disappointed at their demise.

Hmmmm......I got True Value confused with True Temper regarding axes and saws.
My bad.
Still the loss of a great business though.

We cannot be America without our small-town hardware stores.

True Value and Ace allowed independent small hardware stores to compete with large chains by providing leverage when buying from suppliers.
Lately I've noticed fully corporate owned and managed Ace, and maybe True Values.
My local hardware store was, a few years ago, both an Ace and a True Temper----I still can't figure that one out.
Meanwhile, the Home Improvement "big box" outfits seem to be struggling, and not a few have shuttered.
