If y'all are at all of a literary bent (@sweetandsour ), check this out on YouTube. Apparently a group of giants in American letters fished together in Key West in the '70s.

Imagine, Guy de la Valdene made a movie called Tarpon featuring his buddies Jim Harrison, Tom McGuane, and Jimmy Buffett. All were interviewed for this well done documentary except my favorite, Mr Harrison, on account of he died in 2016.

To think he had a house right over the pass in Livingstone from where we spent summers with my mother's family...I'd have been the snotnose kid knocking on his door...probably for the best I didn't know!

Amazing, how all of those particular guys met up and hung out together. Out of the 5 I'd say the one I most envy is McGuane.

Looking back as best I can, to '73-75, those were my college years, and I don't think I would trade those years for theirs, and I'm darn sure glad that no one was there to film my friends and I. Instead of key west and tarpon, we had the west jetties, north jetties, and Rollover Pass at Gilchrist, for a summer full of adventure, not to mention the surf between High Island and Sabine Pass, and the 300' beach seines that we had free access to. Now that I think about it I wish like hell that I did have some photos and film from those days.

Not saying I'd trade my time for theirs, but Holy cow, I'd have loved to hear the conversations. I'm a meathead compared to those guys. As you say, only McGuane I think made it sound with his mind quite intact, but still....

College for me was sneaking off with a buddy to the UP of Michigan. Ashamed to say I was never quite legal but then again, neither was anybody else back then. Really good times.

Finally watched this last night. Saddest thing I've seen in a while. Seriously. I drank beer and watched it alone and I came away almost crying over lost youth - theirs, yours, mine. I was pretty reckless in youth so I don't reflect much. This movie brought it back, especially the friends lost. Even those who made it out of their 20's have been dying one at a time every few years since then. Like the pals in the film, there's too many gone.

I'm younger than you, I think, but man. Same reaction. High school friends gone to their reward or the other side of the world, most of my fraternity brothers dead or lost souls wandering. We were something once, but that band has broken up too soon. And my buddies and I weren't creative geniuses, either, but honestly? I'm more glad such a time existed than mournful that it's gone when I really think about it. And I'm grateful to know that I'm not alone in my thoughts.
