Pie. The Baby Jesus had pie, not cake.

And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths stained from recently feasted on blackberry pie, and lying in a manger.

Traditional Christmas Cake

I like fruit cake.

There is a neighboring parish in which a bunch of ladies make a bunch of fruit cakes and sell them as a traditional fundraiser. I get a few, if I'm able.

I really like the walnuts in the cakes.

I like real fruit cake, devoid of candied orange peels and the like, have you ever eaten an orange peel in it's candied nastiness? Lemon candied peel, positively terrible, Cherry and lime, nothing but a puke fest, Yes you have, and you know it really sucks.

+1 Of course I'm partial to my own fruit cake recipe, which does not include orange or lemon peels, but does contain some candied cherries and pineapple, and loads of pecans and coconut, along with a cup or so of good bourbon such as WT101. If anyone who calls themselves a lady or a gentlemen tries a bite or two of fruit cake with a cup of strong French drip coffee from a thermos during a break while on a quail hunt on a cold winter day, then they would be hooked. That's how it happened with me.

Traditional Christmas Cake

Post by Bloodhound »

For a few years, my mom found a fruitcake that came in a blue square and long box like a sleeve of saltine crackers. It was more cake than fruit and the fruit was dried and the cake was good. I am guessing High in preservatives, but it was OK to eat...still not a favorite and it was never really a tradition except with my great aunt...

My Grannie's (her recipe handed down) basic white cake - 4 ingredients. The icing is chocolate fudge "7 minute icing."

This is a family favorite but only seems to appear around the holidays.

Fruitcake!

If yours is dry, just add a bottle of bourbon.
