I enjoy hunting. I'm not a die hard sort of hunter, but more of a "I like the quiet in the woods and I like eating what I kill" sort of hunter. That said, I don't get as much time in the woods as I'd like. However, I'm fortunate that one of my dad's friends loves to hunt, but he doesn't like to eat deer. He has a few hundred acres and gives us quite a few deer every year. This morning he got a decent buck. This past week he popped a couple small does (getting the ball rolling after a slow start). The does weren't worth taking to a processor, so I've spent some time today cleaning up the meat and tenderizing it. It will get used for fried "steaks," stews, etc.

Nice little 8 pt. Looks like maybe a 2-1/2 yr old deer. Do y'all look at the teeth, etc, to estimate the age of the deer there JM? Most of the deer leases in Texas keep up with that.
The Indians will not bother you now, on account of ... you are touched.

Awesome! Nothing beats a free deer! I miss killing something and eating it.
My only quarrel with deer hunting is sitting all day long waiting for a deer. If nothing comes, I think of everything else I could have done. I love walking in the woods and small game hunting suits me better these days. Haven't found much time for that either though.
We have a herd of deer that hangs out on the property. I could walk down to the soybean field on any given evening and pop a doe, but we don't have freezer space for it. Maybe next year we'll can beans rather than freeze them.

I don't understand why you kill animals for food instead of getting it at the grocery store.

I've been pretty much legislated out of hunting fierce long tailed birds when CA banned lead shot for hunting. Steel shot would destroy my old SxS which I shot for over 40 years.
I did buy a Lanber o/u which can handle steel shot just fine, but I've lost the desire, especially since my dad passed.
I think I'll pour a generous Brandy and raise a glass in his honor.
He was a better wing shot than I'll ever be.
