there's a cautionary tale worth considering here.
At one time in the 60's and early 70's, after declaring independence in 1943, Beirut was considered the Paris on the middle east---Lebanon being in the French sphere of influence--- with a thriving economy, architecture, tourism, culture and a substantial Maronite Christian population.
Somewhere along the way, Lebanon lost its sovereignty because of internal politics. Christians feared a powerful Lebanese military could be used against them, they feared being drawn into an Arab Israeli conflict, so they basically did nothing.
Moslems felt obligated to fight Israel but feared having an Army whose officer corps consisted mostly of Christians, so they allowed Islamic militias to wage war against Israel. A civil war resulted and the rest is History.
Lebanon's Sovereignty is realistically non-existent.
The lesson to be learned is that a nation's Sovereignty matters a great deal.
And we should take notice when Mexican cartels, violent gangs from Nicaragua, and those with allegiances to hostile nations start to influence how our country is run. It is an attack on our Sovereignty, and judging by History, that can't bode well.
