Sutliff & Mac Baren Closing

Post by FredS »

Have we discussed this yet?

The Scandinavian Tobacco Group (aka STG, largest pipe tobacco producer in the world) bought Sutliff and Mac Baren (second largest pipe tobacco producer in the world). Sutliff is in America (VA I think) and Mac Baren is in Denmark, as is STG. The sales happened last year and now news is out that STG will close the factories of both brands. I've read that Sutliff's blends will disappear while some of Mac Baren's blends will transfer to STG's factory.

This is all internet scuttlebutt, but it's scuttlebutt from many sources. Too bad we don't have a tobacco industry insider hanging 'round this place.

WOW! I have a few MB blends that I really like...it would be a shame to lose them.

I saw a list of projected surviving blends. It’s a short list. I’ll see if I can find it.

I do not know the source or his credentials. For what it’s worth.

I can't recall ever smoking a Sutliff blend that I cared for. As far as MB, I've enjoyed ODF, Dark Flake, Navy Flake, and Plum Cake, from time to time. I saw on the clip provided by JimVH that Presbyterian is involved? I wasn't sure who made it anymore; but surely a historical blend such as it wouldn't be discontinued, even if it's changed over the years anyway.

I received an email a few days ago from sutliff. Massive cuts.

In bulk, only Black Cordial, Creme Brulee, Vanilla Custard, and Rum and Maple will still be produced.

The MacBaren plant is already shut down. In future, Mac Baren will only produce VA No. 1, Scottish Mixture, Navy Flake, and Vanilla Cream Loose Cut.

OGS, St Bruno Ready Rubbed and Flake, Presbyterian Mixture, 3 Nuns, and Calstan Blue will still be produced.

That is all.

I have been fond of the Mac Baron brand. I bought a whole bunch of Dark Twist Flake, in my cellar.
I smoked a tin of Vanilla Cream as my trademark scent while walking from pilgrim site to pilgrim site in Rome.

I have a small collection of prized Mac Baren swag, including a couple of premium pipe-holder ash trays with cork knobs.

That said, I haven't spent a dime on Mac Baren in years. So my fault, and I'm sorry to see them go.

We need to get more hipster kids into smoking pipes. The best way is to smoke in public as often as you can, and look really cool when you do so.

The only thing I will miss is Burley London Blend, and it was already out of production. I have a few in the cellar.
