Garden 2022...

Post by joegoat »

Our garden is taking some work this year. Watering twice a day to keep the young plants alive. Peas are starting to sprout. Everything else is clinging to life. On a good note, the lack of rain is keeping the weeds down. I'll need to cultivate next week to kill if the ones that are starting to show.

My garden is grassier this year than I ever remember. Partly due to poor planning of where I planted certain things, and partly from lack of hoeing. I'm just running out of time and/or energy for everything. If I am honest with myself, I may need to scale my garden back so I can handle everything. My three daughters work hard, but I can't crack the whip on them like I could if they were boys. And my dad, his back is getting the better of him. This is the least amount of work he has put into this garden I've ever seen. He absolutely can't stand that he can't do all that he used to be able to, and I certainly can't say anything that would hint to the fact that I could use the help. That said, however, the work he's done would put most of these girly boys these days to shame.

Yesterday I picked three 5-gallon buckets of purple hulls. Today, me, my girls, and my dad pick another 6 buckets. I then shelled them all throughout the day. That little pea sheller I bought has been worth every cotton picking (pea pickin) cent I paid for it.

I'm off work Monday. Dad and I will get a really early start and pick the corn that's ready. The girls will help shuck and silk it. Then we'll blanch it in the crawfish pots and cut most of it into cream corn to put in the deep freezer. We grew G90 this year bc that's the only seed the co-op had. We've always planted Merit and as of right now, I prefer the it. In the words of ID, "We shall see."

Good luck with watering. We've either had not nearly enough or way too much rain this year.

Everything is done, pretty much, with a few peppers and muscadines still hanging on. I pickled a few jalapenos, cucumbers, and made some jelly. Still have 2-3 gals of grape juice for more jelly if I find some jars. Also there's a gal of muscadine wine aging now, and another 2 gals fermenting.

BTW, just to add to my guilt for the Atlantic Beach Pie shown above, I sprinkled a generous sprinkle of sea salt on top of the whipped cream topping. It's just too rich. I'm on my second cup of coffee, trying to chase it down and neutralize it somehow.
