Yeah, sometimes it seems to work that way. I saw the abracadabra and the please-and-thank-you right off, recalling childhood TV magicians. Then I guessed between shazam and presto for the fourth word and went with presto. The blue wedding vows and green row fell into place, and I didn't even think at all about the yellow row.
"They" say that these sorts of puzzles are good exercise for one's mind. Hopefully so, but for me it's just for kicks, and a part of my morning routine when nothing else is going on. There are some good mentors in my past that did the same thing. But one guy in particular stands out in my memory, an assistant plant manager/mechanical engineer where I worked my first job after college, every morning would come into the lab office with a cup of Seaport coffee, light up a Lucky Strike non-filter, and sit down and very quickly do the crossword and daily jumble in the morning paper.
