I just spent a lot of money on phone chargers for the family.

Each new USB generation adds a valuable feature, and it also introduces a problem that will be fixed by the next generation. In addition, successive generations are planned in such a way that obsolescence is ensured within a carefully determined timeframe. Thus, income across the entirety of the marketplace curve below is maximized:

Maximum benefits for USB; maximum cost for the user. USB uses standardization to create an uneven playing field, subverting capitalism.

This sort of thing is what USB does, but similar sorts of things are the norm today in the business world.

We just landed a grain handling system for a new bourbon distillery in KY. We knew we had a good shot at it so, a few weeks ago, the boss preemptively sent me a bottle of Angel's Envy (we did their system a few years ago) so I could have a drink via a Team video call with the rest of the crew in Kansas City. I work from home so I had three.
