There appears to be varying sandwich building views on what a Ham & Cheese Sandwich aught to be.

Bread, ham, cheese, mayonnaise (NOT Miracle Whip)
I am not as cool as JimVH. Nor or you. Well, unless you ARE JimVH.

Grill ham in the cast iron skillet (which never leaves the stove top and rarely gets washed).

Pick a cheese from the selection in the fridge. Add some mayo. Maybe mustard (anything but that yellow stuff).

Grill the sandwich with butter on the outside.

The passive aggression being displayed towards miracle whip in this thread is frustrating.

I’m not mad at you, just very disappointed.

And for the record, smoked ham, Swiss, and Düsseldorf style mustard on rye.

Buttered and griddled makes for a nice finish, when available.

So disappointed.

I hear you, Jim. I used to eat Miracle Whip until I was shamed into swearing off it on CPS. The intolerance is palpable and oppressive.

As for a proper ham and cheese sandwich, honey ham (that part is important and maybe even most important), swiss, american, cheddar, provolone, or pepper jack cheese, or better yet, all of them, and mayo on whatever heels of bread are left over by the kids and wife because that's what good dad's do.

What sort of rye? Dark? Marbled?

And I thought you lived in Texas. When would a griddle not be available?

I’m equal opportunity. Light, dark, marble, and I have a particular fondness for pumpernickel with ham and Swiss.

Griddles are frequently unavailable during periods of laziness.

Ham & Cheese Sandwich

Ham sandwiches are for the day after Thanksgiving only.

Hot open faced with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy on top, don't forget the black olives.
