I am at that time in life when a lot of my work mentors are leaving...I have been spending a lot of time thinking about the loss, since a recent funeral...
So...I have also been listening to some music I hadn't listened to in quite a while.
When I got out of the academy, I was hired on to a small Sheriff's Office in Southern Colorado. I was low man, so I worked a lot of night shifts. In a pawn shop in Alamosa, I found a cassette player that plugged into the antenna port of the car radio and allowed the cassette to use the car speakers...So my "Tunes" were available in my patrol car without altering the 1985 Dodge RamCharger with 145,000 miles...This was one of the tapes that spent lots of time playing in the dark of the night as I roamed/patrolled thru the county back roads and on my way to calls. Normally I was the only deputy on duty, so the tunes kept me company.

I'm sorry for your recent loss. Those events make me a lot more reflective as I age and I get what you are saying. I'm in a similar place in life. Most of my mentors are gone and, due to the weird turn my career took, all the people I mentored are gone, too.
Music is my therapist.
It's funny you picked Asia as an example. A girl ruined them for me in 1982 and apparently I haven't grown up enough yet to get past it. I only got about 20 seconds into your link and had to turn it off.

I was talking about this with some friends and fam in real life just a few days ago. How music can take you to a very specific time and place. Good times or bad. For me the major imprints were made between the ages of 12 and 25. Great thread Scott.
Also - - - Thank your mentors before it's too late. I'm lucky enough that I was able to write letters to the three men who mentored/influenced me the most while they were alive. I'd always worried that I wouldn't get the chance, but a few years ago I made the conscious decision to do it, and it made me immensely happy to throw some love their way. As good mentors are want to do, they turned it right around and made it about me, and how proud they were of me. Also, Jim, you mentorees aren't gone. Track a few of them down, ask how they're doing, and wish them well. It'll do a world of good for all of you.

Good thread, and I like the sentiment.
