I want to get old enough to live out Tom T Halls song about old dogs and children.

I want to kick it the day before I become someone's burden. It would be cool to make it through my 70's. With my health and history, that would probably be generous.

I think I'll be a pretty cool old man.

As long as I can keep my health and a few friends around, I'm in no hurry to leave.

My grandfather was an old farmer, passed away at 86. He reached the point where his favorite joke went like this:

Anyone: "How you doing, Pete?"
Popo: "Well, I'm fine. But I've quit buying green bananas."

I've always reckoned that my expiration date is 86. We'll see how it goes.

I want to get old enough to sit in the shade with my dog for four hours and not feel like I should have been productive. I'm pretty good at shutting down and chillin' but there's still a bit of my parents work ethic that I can't shake for that long.

Everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.
This world is so sick & getting sicker if I was taken tomorrow, I'd be ok with that.

There are still a few things I need to do, a few places I want to go, and still a few people that I want to piss off. I have a feeling that I'll know when it's time.

For me, it's more about burdening others than a number. I like the native American philosophy on death. When you become a burden to the tribe, you go on your spirit walk. I tell my wife and kids that's my plan. They get mad and mostly think I'm joking but I'm not. I think the ideal is to walk into the wilderness once it's time and let nature take it's course. Now, what constitutes a burden is a bit more complicated to define. I haven't quite worked that part out but I figure I'll know when I get there. At least I hope I will. My biggest fear is having something equivalent to a stroke and missing the window of opportunity where I will have the wherewithall to know and be able to act on my behalf.

As old as God wants me to get.
