I used to wear them when I was teaching, but ever since the ol' carotid artery got whittled on, I avoid them because of the discomfort. My dressy-er shirts are button down anyway and button down collars don't like neckties.
For my Sunday ushering gig I have what they called in the Army, a profile. No necktie expected.
But this morning I've got a funeral to attend for a well loved Monsignor (who presided over the funeral masses of both my parents) and I feel moved to wear a necktie this morning out of respect.
I have a dark blue American Chesterton Society tie that I've selected for the occasion. Dark blue, while not black, ought to be somber enough.
It's a real tie, not a clip-on, btw.
That's my necktie story.
Are there any other necktie stories floating around out there?

I just tied a necktie!
I learned to tie a neck tie the day I graduated from high school. Maybe that's a bit late, but it could have ben a lot worse.
The very next day I started a new job as a stock boy at a local drug store. In those days, you wore a smock and a tie.
I didn't know this, so when I came in without a tie on my first day my new boss tossed a tie at me and said, "put this on".

I wore a tie daily for a little over 20 years. Over the last year I wore one only three times: a court hearing, a wedding, and a funeral.
I really don’t miss them.

Hov, that's awesome! I'm glad you can comfortably wear a necktie again. It's a shame that we almost never need to wear them now that you've regained the ability.

I don't mind wearing a necktie when it's called for. For me, that's most often funerals and weddings. These days, I'm often the only one wearing a tie at those functions, although if it's a family affair my younger brothers will be dressed similarly.
In the 90's-00's I held a job that required wearing ties to the office frequently. I have all sorts of corny ties left from those days - tobasco, ducks, deer, fishing lures, santa, mickey mouse, etc. They're hideous! What was I thinking?

Now that you mention it, I still have a rainbow trout fish tie from the 80s somewhere.FredS wrote: ↑06 Jul 2023, 10:47 I don't mind wearing a necktie when it's called for. I wore a tie for my first 9 years at the this job. I started with basic dress ties. Then one of my co-workers was given a Jerry Garcia. My wife and I went to dinner with he and his wife one night after work, and he was wearing the Jerry Garcia tie, and my wife bought me one the next week. It was down hill from there. My co-worker and I wore only Jerry Garcia ties for work for 3 years. I still had some basic dress ties for somber occasions, but I have a bunch of Jerry Garcia ties. Since I changed units, and I spend almost no time in court now, I haven't worn ties for work in 5 years. I have them if needed, but for now tie-less is good
